Foto's Elton John brengen 900.000 dollar op
A selection of prints from Elton John's extensive photography collection, including works by Ansel Adams and Robert Mapplethorpe, has sold for more than 900,000 dollars in New York.
The 73 photographs auctioned by Christie's on Thursday night were chosen form the pop superstar's stash of 4,000 fine art photographs -- considered one of the world's leading private collections. Among the highlights was one of Mapplethorpe's trademark floral works, "Vase with White Tulips," which was picked up by an anonymous buyer for 83,650 dollars, significantly more than its 50,000-dollar high estimate.
An Adams' landscape, "Tetons and Snake River," went for a little over 43,000 dollars, while an Irving Penn portrait of Woody Allen dressed like Charlie Chaplin was bought for 20,315 dollars. The total amount realized by the sale was 900,791 dollars.
"This was the first time that Sir Elton John has performed such an exercise, and Christie's is equally delighted with the sale result," said Josh Holdeman, head of the auction house's photography department.

Bush vs Kerry in foto's
Het verkiezingsspektakel in de Verenigde Staten is elke vier jaar een geliefd onderwerp voor persfotografen, waarvan een respectabel aantal de presidentskandidaten dag in dag uit op de voet volgt door het hele land. Deze politieke fotografen, die in rustiger jaren hun tijd in Washington D.C. slijten, moeten maandenlang "on the road" leven, trein in, bus uit, vliegtuig in, en komen ondanks overgeorganiseerde "photo opportunities" toch met uiterst boeiende reportages thuis.
Een van deze fotojournalistieke nomaden is Brooks Kraft (Corbis), die donderdagavond nog te zien en beluisteren was in de documentaire "Journeys with George" (VPRO). Er is een interview met hem te bekijken op The Photography Channel, en zijn reportages voor TIME Magazine zijn ook online te vinden. Fotograaf doodgeschoten in Mosul
Een Iraakse fotograaf werkzaam voor het internationale fotopersbureau EPA is donderdag door vier nog onbekende aanvallers voor zijn huis in Mosul doodgeschoten. Dat heeft EPA donderdagavond bekendgemaakt.
De 22-jarige Karam Hussein had kort daarvoor nog foto's genomen van een rebellenaanval op een Amerikaans konvooi en een bomaanslag. Waarom hij vermoord is, is vooralsnog onduidelijk.

Arnon Grunberg in gesprek met Tijs Goldschmidt (1953), bioloog en schrijver. Van hem verscheen onder meer "Darwins Hofvijver", de essaybundel "Oversprongen" en "De andere linkerkant". Samen bekijken ze de foto’s die Goldschmidt heeft samengesteld uit het Spaarnestad Fotoarchief. Onder de titel Wegkijken maakte hij een tentoonstelling met foto’s die bij de kijker schaamte oproepen. Wie ziek is moet ook ziek lijken
De vorige week gepubliceerde foto van de herstellende Jan Peter Balkenende is een gemiste kans, vindt columnist Jan Kuitenbrouwer. De premier oogt zo gezond, wat doet hij eigenlijk nog in het ziekenhuis? Ronald Reagan wist stukken beter hoe je dat moet aanpakken.

Van Balkenende werd niets vernomen tot afgelopen vrijdag, toen de Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst een foto vrijgaf van Balkenende in het ziekenhuis. In eerste instantie deed hij me denken aan het soort foto's dat je wel eens in Story of Privé ziet staan: schlagerzangeres is van de trap gevallen en bedankt haar fans voor de vele bloemen en teddyberen.
Die verbonden voet in beeld, wat moeten we daaruit opmaken? Dat het echt waar is? Wat zit Balkenende daar eigenlijk te doen, in dat uitgespaarde hoekje van de bloementafel? Die kaartjes te beantwoorden? Maar de grootste fout is dat Balkenende niet ligt en in pyjama is. Want als Balkenende weer fit is, waarom houdt hij zich dan nog schuil in een ziekenhuis te Capelle?
Reagan ligt in een suite die luxueus is, en toch sober. Telefoon, klok, zitje met telefoon, wat wandversiering voor de sfeer, keurige schemerlamp. Precies wat je nodig hebt om als zieke staatsman door te regeren. Bij Reagan hangt één ballon aan de lamp. Hij heeft duizenden, honderdduizenden bloemstukken en ballonnen gekregen, natuurlijk, en die staan allemaal veilig in de opslag, maar die ene (van zijn favoriete kleinkind?), die hangt bij zijn bed. Briljant.

"Gratis PR-foto's bedreigen persfotografie"
De Duitse professor Rolf Nobel maakt zich zorgen over de wildgroei aan pr- en themafoto's in de kranten en magazines. De beelden tasten de integriteit en de objectiviteit van de media aan, zegt Nobel.
Hij merkt in de Duitse media steeds meer foto's van pr-bureau's op. De beelden zijn geen journalistiek, benadrukt hij. "Public relationsbureau's willen hun opgepoetste waarheid overbrengen. In een fabriek draagt iedereen een helm en houdt elke arbeider zich mooi aan de veiligheidsvoorschriften", geeft hij als voorbeeld. Ook non-gouvernementele organisaties, zoals bijvoorbeeld Oxfam, geven journalisten graag pr-foto’s mee.

Elton John verkoopt deel van zijn fotocollectie

I started collecting photography in 1991 after becoming sober. I think that's probably the key to it all. It's like my eyes were suddenly open and I started noticing things I hadn't noticed in years. I wanted to surround myself with beautiful things that I can afford and that I love. It inspires me.

Sir Elton John verkoopt een deel van zijn fotocollectie. De foto's gaan donderdag onder de hamer bij het veilinghuis Christie's in New York. De artiest verkoopt een kleine selectie, omdat hij meer verscheidenheid wil aanbrengen in zijn verzameling.
De Britse zanger bezit circa 4000 kunstfoto's en zijn verzameling wordt als een van 's werelds belangrijkste privé-collecties beschouwd. Hiervan biedt Elton John er tachtig aan op de veiling. Het gaat om werk van onder anderen Ansel Adams, Man Ray en Robert Mapplethorpe.
Een karakteristieke landschapsfoto van Adams getiteld 'Tetons and Snake River' zal naar verwachting tussen de 28.000 en 36.000 euro opbrengen. Een ander hoogtepunt is een antieke prent van de kunstenaar Constantine Brancusi.

Fotojournalist Paul Taggart (WpN) vrijgelaten in Irak
An American photographer abducted by gunmen in Baghdad on Sunday has been freed and is safe, the picture agency representing him said on Tuesday. Paul Taggart (24) has been released and has spoken by telephone with his parents in Tulsa, Oklahoma, said Stephen Claypole, chief executive officer of World Picture News in New York.
Claypole said Taggart, who had been in Iraq for about five months, was kidnapped by three masked gunmen early on Sunday morning in Baghdad's Habbeya Square when his car was intercepted by what appeared to be a criminal gang. He had been on his way to a planned 10-day picture-shooting project in Sadr City, the sprawling and volatile Shi'ite slum area in the east of the city.
The abduction was one of dozens of kidnappings of non-Iraqis in recent months, many of which have ended with the victims killed by beheading or other means.
The work of media in Iraq has been severely limited because of the deadly uprising by opponents of the U.S.-led forces that occupied the country last year. Frequent bombings, abductions and shooting have made moving around the country extremely dangerous.
Taggart's release was partly facilitated by his journalist colleagues in the Baghdad, Claypole said. "He is on his way now to the New York Times compound in Baghdad," he added. He did not give details about the circumstances of the release.

Corbis laat scannen over aan fotografen
Het fotoagentschap Corbis heeft laten weten dat fotojournalisten die op film werken voortaan zelf het scannen van hun films moeten verzorgen of daarvoor derde bedrijven moeten inschakelen.
In tegenstelling tot wat op andere Nederlandse websites wordt beweerd is het NIET zo dat voortaan alleen digitale opnamen worden geaccepteerd.
Corbis accepteert digitale én gedigitaliseerde analoge opnamen. Het scant alleen niet meer zelf maar laat dat over aan de fotograaf (of derden): "Corbis will accept digital files from film and print, but each photographer will be responsible for producing his/her own high-resolution scans."
Een zelfde misverstand doet zich jaarlijks voor bij World Press Photo als de directeur het percentage digitaal ingestuurde opnamen gelijk stelt aan het percentale digitale opnamen (d.w.z. met een digitale camera geproduceerd), voorbijgaand aan het substantiële percentage reportage-fotografen dat zijn/haar opnamen op film maakt en deze scant en/of op analoge wijze afwerkt). Velen zenden uit kostenbesparing hun analoge opnamen gedigitaliseerd per cd-rom of internet naar dergelijke wedstrijden.

Digital cameras have come way down in price, but not nearly far enough. While digital camera prices in the 100 - 500 dollar range may appeal to a wide array of buyers, many don’t understand that the functionality of the cameras they’re purchasing in this price range may leave a lot to be desired.
Those coming from film cameras, for instance, will be sorely disappointed to learn that virtually every digital camera under 1,500 dollars will suffer from shutter lag, a delay between the time that you press the shutter and the time that the camera actually snaps a picture.
Just about any inexpensive film camera will take pictures almost instantly. Digital cameras, by contrast, too often force you to think about the camera rather than the picture you want to take. It’s not uncommon for camera buyers to begin a cycle of upgrading when they learn that the affordable cameras aren’t as snappy as they expect.
It’s only when you get into the range of interchangeable lens digital cameras, such as the Canon 20D or the Nikon D70, that you find cameras that function as quickly as you do. Expect to spend at least 2,000 dollars, though, for one of these cameras plus a lens and a few accessories - and don’t expect to end up with a “pocketable” small camera. Currently, there really is no miniature digital camera that responds instantly to your picture taking wishes. They all suffer from some degree of shutter lag.
Hidden costs are huge
Yet the price of the camera you ultimately end up with is just the beginning of the expense of digital photography.
Today’s high-megapixel cameras are great for capturing fine detail, but the files from these cameras can require vast amounts of storage space. Your 120-gigabyte hard drive that you thought would last you for years will suddenly fill up in two months, thanks to your digital images.
More hard drive space is something that virtually every digital photographer requires. Some of the most avid digital photography enthusiasts today invest in second computers simply for storage. Storage capacities of four to eight 250 gigabyte hard drives are required by some. The cost of storage itself can surpass the cost of a digital camera.
Printing and paper costs can be enormous, as well. Printer manufacturers lure customers with low prices for photo printers, but the true cost lies in purchasing refill ink cartridges. Two sets of ink cartridges can be more expensive than the printer. Photo paper is not cheap, either. In your typical photo printer, a few sheets of high-quality photo paper are typically supplied. But purchase 50 or 100 sheets of this paper, and you’ll soon understand why more is not given away with the printer.
What’s the final cost?

Storage, accessories, computer upgrades, and printer expenses will usually dwarf the amount you spend on a camera in short order. Digital photography is fun.
